Practical questions before commissioning a mural

The questions that come up most often.

Can I see the design before deciding?

Yes. Before any agreement, Giulia shows you the project as an image on your own wall, with the detailed price. Several sketches are proposed to you before the project is confirmed.

What type of mural works well in Taormina?

In Taormina, villas and hotels with views over Etna and the Ionian Sea suit sea-inspired subjects, classical motifs drawing on the Greek Theatre, or a bright trompe l'oeil. Everything is hand-painted with acrylic colours, no wallpaper or printing involved.

Will it damage the wall?

No damage at all. Acrylic paint adheres to an already painted or plastered wall, with no stripping or heavy primer needed. And if you change your mind in ten years, a coat of paint is enough to cover it.

Taormina, between Etna and the Ionian Sea

Here, a mural works best when it plays off the view of the sea and the volcano, inside the villas and hotels of the historic centre.

Villas and residences

Living rooms, bedrooms, terraces and entrances of villas overlooking Etna or the Ionian Sea. Example: an 8 m² living room wall in a detailed subject, around €4,800.

Hotels and luxury venues

Five-star hotels, boutiques and restaurants near the Greek Theatre and the medieval historic centre. Example: a 12 m² hotel wall in a detailed subject, around €7,200.

Facades and exterior walls

The salt air of the coast calls for specific surface preparation. Much of Taormina's medieval historic centre is protected. From €400 per m², plus scaffolding if needed.

A mural for this place

Taormina was founded around 358 BC by Greek colonists from Naxos, and its Greek Theatre, second in size in Sicily only to the one in Syracuse, still overlooks the headland today with views of Etna and the Ionian Sea. The medieval historic centre, once a capital of Byzantine Sicily, still holds noble palazzi and flower-lined lanes. Requests come from private villas, luxury hotels and venues looking for a distinctive feature. Giulia travels easily to paint: she comes to see the wall in person, or works first from photos and measurements.

Frequently asked questions about murals in Taormina

How much does a mural cost in Taormina?

In Taormina the rate reflects a high-end destination: €400 per square metre for a simple motif, €600 for a detailed subject, €800 for a trompe l'oeil or ceiling. The quote is free.

How long does the work take?

The timeline depends on the project: we discuss it together based on the wall and the subject. As a general guide, a simple motif takes less time than a very detailed subject or a large surface.

Does a mural hold up outdoors in Taormina?

Yes, with surface preparation suited to the salt air of the coast. The best period for an exterior mural runs from spring to autumn, outside the peak tourist season.

Do I need permission to paint a facade?

For an interior wall, no. For a facade visible from the street, you generally need the owner's or building association's agreement, and a notice to the municipality if the building sits in a protected zone: much of Taormina's medieval historic centre is protected. Giulia explains the process before starting.

Can a mural be changed or removed later?

Yes. A mural painted in acrylic can be painted over like any regular wall paint. It can also be reworked or extended later on.
