Practical questions before commissioning a mural

The questions that come up most often.

Can I see the design before deciding?

Yes. Before any agreement, Giulia shows you the project as an image on your own wall, with the detailed price. Several sketches are proposed to you before the project is confirmed.

What type of mural works well in Normandy?

In half-timbered houses and Belle Époque-style villas, a discreet botanical or marine motif fits well with the region's uneven walls. Everything is hand-painted with acrylic colours, no wallpaper or printing involved.

Will it damage the wall?

No damage at all. Acrylic paint adheres to an already painted or plastered wall, with no stripping or heavy primer needed. And if you change your mind in ten years, a coat of paint is enough to cover it.

Normandy, between painterly tradition and heritage

Here, painting works with uneven walls, changeable Atlantic light and an artistic legacy that reaches back to Impressionism.

Homes and villas

Bedrooms, living rooms, entrances, stairwells and ceilings in half-timbered houses and coastal villas. Example: a 10 m² villa bedroom wall in a detailed subject, around €2,500.

Hotels and restaurants

Historic hotels, restaurants and shops in town centres, often in half-timbered buildings with uneven walls. Example: a 15 m² restaurant room in a detailed subject, around €3,750.

Facades and exterior walls

The Atlantic climate, damp and windy, calls for a suitable primer and a resistant finish. An exterior wall visible from the street generally needs the owner's or building association's agreement. From €150 per m², plus scaffolding if needed.

Murals designed for Normandy

Born along the Seine between Paris and the Norman coast, Impressionism remains today one of the pillars of the region's tourist appeal, and the most recognised pictorial movement in the Western world. The D-Day beaches, with 94 memorial sites, 44 museums and 21 memorials, candidates for UNESCO World Heritage status, represent Normandy's leading tourism theme and a central element of its regional identity. Requests come from half-timbered houses, coastal villas, historic hotels and restaurants looking for a distinctive feature that plays off this dual legacy, both painterly and memorial. Giulia travels easily to paint: she comes to see the wall in person, or works first from photos and measurements.

Frequently asked questions about murals in Normandy

How much does a mural cost in Normandy?

The rate is per square metre: €150 for a simple motif, €250 for a detailed subject, €350 for a trompe l'oeil or ceiling. The quote is free.

How long does the work take?

The timeline depends on the project: we discuss it together based on the wall and the subject. As a general guide, a simple motif takes less time than a very detailed subject or a large surface.

Does a mural hold up outdoors in Normandy?

Yes, with surface preparation suited to the Atlantic climate, often damp and windy. The best period for an exterior mural runs from late spring to early autumn.

Do I need permission to paint a facade?

For an interior wall, no. For a facade visible from the street, you generally need the owner's or building association's agreement, and a notice to the municipality if the building sits in a protected zone. Giulia explains the process before starting.

Can a mural be changed or removed later?

Yes. A mural painted in acrylic can be painted over like any regular wall paint. It can also be reworked or extended later on.
