Practical questions before commissioning a mural

The questions that come up most often.

Can I see the design before deciding?

Yes. Before any agreement, Giulia shows you the project as an image on your own wall, with the detailed price. Several sketches are proposed to you before the project is confirmed.

What type of mural works well in Matera?

In the Sassi cave houses, with their limestone walls, a simple motif or a discreet trompe l'oeil work well with the rustic character of the place. Everything is hand-painted with acrylic colours, no wallpaper or printing involved.

Will it damage the wall?

No damage at all. Acrylic paint adheres to an already painted or plastered wall, with no stripping or heavy primer needed. And if you change your mind in ten years, a coat of paint is enough to cover it.

Matera, between stone and history

Here, a mural works when it plays off the limestone of the houses carved into the rock, without covering their character.

Sassi cave houses

Bedrooms, entrances, living rooms of renovated cave houses in the Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso. Example: an 8 m² bedroom wall in a simple motif, around €1,200.

Hotels and B&Bs

Boutique hotels fitted out in historic cave houses, B&Bs in the historic centre. Example: a 12 m² lobby wall in a detailed subject, around €3,000.

Facades and exterior walls

Limestone calls for specific surface preparation. From €150 per m², plus scaffolding if needed.

A mural for this place

The dwellings carved into the rock at Matera, known as the Sassi, were inhabited from the Bronze Age until the late 1950s: the term "Sassi" for this rocky district goes back to a document from 1204. The site is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, split between the Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso. Many cave houses have been renovated into boutique hotels and quality residences, keeping their stone walls exposed. Requests come from owners of Sassi houses, historic hotels and B&Bs in the centre. Giulia travels easily to paint: she comes to see the wall in person, or works first from photos and measurements.

Frequently asked questions about murals in Matera

Can I see the design before deciding?

Yes. Before any agreement, Giulia shows you the project as an image on your own wall, with the detailed price. Several sketches are proposed to you before the project is confirmed.

How much does a mural cost in Matera?

The rate is per square metre: €150 for a simple motif, €250 for a detailed subject, €350 for a trompe l'oeil or ceiling. The quote is free.

How long does the work take?

The timeline depends on the project: we discuss it together based on the wall and the subject. As a general guide, a simple motif takes less time than a very detailed subject or a large surface.

Does a mural hold up outdoors in Matera?

Yes, with surface preparation suited to limestone. The best period for an exterior mural runs from spring to autumn.

Do I need permission to paint a facade?

For an interior wall, no. For a facade visible from the street, you generally need the owner's or building association's agreement, and a notice to the municipality if the building sits in a protected zone: much of the historic Sassi centre is protected. Giulia explains the process before starting.

Can a mural be changed or removed later?

Yes. A mural painted in acrylic can be painted over like any regular wall paint. It can also be reworked or extended later on.
