Getting married in Taormina

Why do so many couples marry in Taormina?

Taormina welcomes couples from all over the world. The town sits on a rock balcony above the Ionian Sea, facing Mount Etna, and its grand hotels open their terraces and tiered gardens to weddings. Couples marry looking over the bay of Naxos, and the celebration runs over two or three days, between the old town and the beach at Mazzarò.

Why does a painter love Taormina?

In February 1863 a young German painter, Otto Geleng, arrived in Taormina. He painted the ancient theatre, the bay and Etna again and again, then showed his canvases in Berlin and Paris. His pictures made people want to see the place, the first travellers came, and Geleng stayed: he married here and served as mayor of Taormina from 1872 to 1882. The town’s fame began with a landscape painter.

What does the painting show?

The moment you choose: the ceremony, the exit, the first dance, the cocktail hour with the guests, or the venue itself with the couple in the foreground. Giulia prepares the composition beforehand from your photographs and images of the venue, then paints on site in Taormina. You know what you will get before the day itself.

Does Giulia know the area?

She comes to Taormina and travels across seventeen European countries. She speaks Italian, French, English and Spanish, and she looks at the venue before painting: the stone of the theatre, the bougainvillea on the walls, the blue of the bay at the hour of the ceremony, and what you have chosen to show.

The wedding venues in Taormina

Giulia travels to the villas and reception venues of the area: San Domenico Palace, Grand Hotel Timeo, Villa Sant’Andrea (Mazzarò).

From the gardens of the Grand Hotel Timeo, on the canvas you can see the columns of the ancient theatre with Etna behind. At the San Domenico Palace, the cloister of the old convent and the bay of Naxos come into the painting. At Villa Sant’Andrea, the beach at Mazzarò and Isola Bella in the evening light.

She also works in Castelmola, Mazzarò, Giardini Naxos, Letojanni, Forza d’Agrò, Savoca, Castiglione di Sicilia, Linguaglossa, Zafferana Etnea, Acireale and Catania.

Does Giulia work in the great villas and estates?

Yes, and she adapts to the house rules of each venue: she stands where she is least in the way, protects the floor around her and leaves with her equipment the same evening. Simply let your venue and your wedding planner know. She also works with agencies and provides a detailed quote that drops straight into a budget.

What is the best season in Taormina?

The season runs from April to October. In summer, dinner is served at nightfall on the terraces: Giulia then paints under the lights of the party, and the canvas leaves with you at the end of the evening. Giulia is available all year round, winter dates included.

What do we need to arrange on site?

A space of roughly two by two metres, away from the flow but visible to the guests, a power socket and light if she paints in the evening. Giulia brings her easel, canvases, acrylics and brushes. That is all the venue needs to know.

Can Etna be part of the painting?

Yes. From the terraces of Taormina the volcano stands to the south, above the coast, and Giulia sets her easel to keep it in the frame. She draws it as soon as she arrives, while the light is clear: if clouds cover it at dinner time, it is already on the canvas, with the plume at its summit if the sky shows it that day.

Giulia also paints commissioned murals in the area: see murals in Taormina.

Music at your wedding in Taormina: the piano and painting show

For your wedding celebration in Taormina, Giulia also offers the piano and painting show. Orlando plays a neoclassical repertoire, in the line of Ludovico Einaudi or Hania Rani, and Giulia paints while he plays, before guests who take the time to watch and photograph the canvas. On the last note the painting is revealed, and it is yours to keep. The show is prepared with you and your wedding venue, on request.
