What a painted window changes for a business

Why have the window painted rather than apply a vinyl?

Because a hand-painted window gets noticed: passers-by slow down, look, take photos. The brushstroke, colours laid in layers, a letter with a little life in it, all of it says that someone came and painted here, for this shop alone. A printed vinyl looks like the neighbour’s. A painted window becomes a landmark in the street, and the painting itself gets people talking about the place before it is even finished.

Who paints the shop window?

Giulia Dal Bon, a painter trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, where she also studied graphic design. She draws the lettering and paints by brush, on site, and travels all over Europe. Corriere della Sera, Domus and Sky Arte have covered her work.

Which occasions suit a painted window?

Christmas first, with a scene running the full width of the window. The sales, Valentine’s Day, Easter, back to school, an opening, the shop’s anniversary, a new collection. Many shopkeepers have the window painted three or four times a year and keep permanent lettering: the name, the opening hours, a line. Giulia fits the shop’s calendar and comes back each season if you wish.

Can the logo and brand colours be included?

Giulia also studied graphic design at the Brera Academy: she draws the lettering by hand and respects your brand guidelines. Yes: the logo painted by hand, in the exact brand colours, with decoration around it. Send the logo in good resolution and the colour references. Giulia prepares two free sketches mounted on a photo of your window, you correct with her, then she paints. She adjusts the design with you.

How long does a painted window last, and how is it removed?

Well-applied glass paint lasts a whole season, rain included. Once the occasion has passed, it comes off with a blade and window cleaner, in an hour, and the glass is clean again. For permanent lettering, the name, the hours, Giulia uses a tougher, varnished paint made to last years on glass.

How it works

Is it painted on the inside or the outside of the glass?

Most often on the inside, in reverse, to protect the paint from rain and passers-by: the classic signwriter’s way. For a seasonal scene the outside works and comes off more easily. Giulia decides with you according to the window, its exposure and the planned duration, and writes it in the quote.

How do I get my shop window painted?

Send Giulia Dal Bon a photo of your shop window, or describe it to her, and she brings your idea to life with you. She offers you a free quote within 48 hours, then two free sketches mounted on your photo: you tell her what you think, and she adjusts. She then comes to paint on the glass, with a brush, and the shop stays open while she works. A painted shop window starts at 150 € per sqm.

Does the shop stay open while she paints?

Yes. Giulia paints during opening hours, in odourless paint, protecting the floor and the window. Customers come and go, and many stop to watch: a window being painted is an event in itself. A standard shop window takes a day, a large glazed front two.

Where does Giulia work?

On the French Riviera, from Menton to Cannes through Nice, Monaco and Antibes; in Milan and its region; in Liguria, from Ventimiglia to Genoa. She also travels elsewhere in France and Italy for a shopping street, a mall or a chain of shops. Travel is agreed together and written into the quote.
