Practical questions before commissioning a mural

The questions that come up most often.

Can I see the design before deciding?

Yes. Before any agreement, Giulia shows you the project as an image on your own wall, with the detailed price. Several sketches are proposed to you before the project is confirmed.

What type of mural works well in Courmayeur?

In Courmayeur, mountain chalets and hotels suit alpine botanical subjects, summit landscapes, or a trompe l'oeil that plays off the wood and stone. Everything is hand-painted with acrylic colours, no wallpaper or printing involved.

Will it damage the wall?

No damage at all. Acrylic paint adheres to an already painted or plastered wall, with no stripping or heavy primer needed. And if you change your mind in ten years, a coat of paint is enough to cover it.

Courmayeur, at the foot of Mont Blanc

Here, a mural works best when it plays off the wood and stone of the chalets, facing Europe's highest massif.

Chalets and residences

Living rooms, bedrooms, entrances and staircases of mountain chalets. Example: an 8 m² living room wall in a detailed subject, around €4,800.

Hotels and luxury venues

Historic hotels, boutiques and cafés along the pedestrian centre of via Roma. Example: a 12 m² hotel wall in a detailed subject, around €7,200.

Facades and exterior walls

The mountain climate calls for specific surface preparation. From €400 per m², plus scaffolding if needed.

A mural for this place

Courmayeur sits at 1,224 metres of altitude, at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif, whose 4,809-metre summit was first climbed in 1786. The historic centre, with the pedestrian via Roma, still holds historic venues such as the Caffè della Posta, open since 1911, and the Tour Malluquin, a 13th-century tower on Piazza Petigax. It is one of Italy's most renowned mountain destinations, with high-end hospitality ranging from historic hotels such as the Grand Hotel Royal e Golf to typical alpine chalets. Requests come from private chalets, hotels and venues looking for a distinctive feature. Giulia travels easily to paint: she comes to see the wall in person, or works first from photos and measurements.

Frequently asked questions about murals in Courmayeur

How much does a mural cost in Courmayeur?

In Courmayeur the rate reflects a high-mountain destination: €400 per square metre for a simple motif, €600 for a detailed subject, €800 for a trompe l'oeil or ceiling. The quote is free.

How long does the work take?

The timeline depends on the project: we discuss it together based on the wall and the subject. As a general guide, a simple motif takes less time than a very detailed subject or a large surface.

Does a mural hold up outdoors in Courmayeur?

Yes, with surface preparation suited to the mountain climate. The best period for an exterior mural runs from late spring to early autumn, outside the cold season.

Do I need permission to paint a facade?

For an interior wall, no. For a facade visible from the street, you generally need the owner's or building association's agreement, and a notice to the municipality if the building sits in a protected zone. Giulia explains the process before starting.

Can a mural be changed or removed later?

Yes. A mural painted in acrylic can be painted over like any regular wall paint. It can also be reworked or extended later on.
