What Giulia paints in a care home
The end of a corridor is the most looked-at wall in a care home, and often the emptiest. A window painted in trompe-l’oeil opens a view there: the sea, a garden, a village street. It is the most demanding level of the craft, at 350 € per sqm, because the perspective is built from the exact point the wall is seen from. Here that is usually from a chair or a wheelchair, and Giulia works to that eye level.
A house front painted beside a door makes it easy to recognise. A blue door with its shutters, a hand-drawn number, a plant painted at the foot of the wall: every room becomes identifiable from a distance. That is a line drawing or a simple motif, at 150 € per sqm.
In the activity room and the dining room the mural takes a whole wall: a landscape from the region, a market, a harbour, the trees of the garden seen through the window. In the entrance hall it gives families a warm first image as they arrive. Outdoors, on a garden wall or a patio front, Giulia paints in quartz paint with a protective varnish.
How it works while the home stays open
Giulia paints in odourless acrylic: the corridor stays in use, the activity room stays open, and every resident stays in their room. She protects the floor around her, works section by section, and leaves the area clean each evening.
Residents watch her paint, and that is an activity in itself. The wall moves forward day after day: people take the time to look, they comment, they recognise a place they once knew. The work is photographed and shared day by day, well before it is finished.
The quote starts from the wall and the technique: a line drawing at 150 € per sqm, a fully painted subject at 250 €, a trompe-l’oeil or a ceiling at 350 €. It is itemised line by line so it fits an activities or a maintenance budget, and the invoice is made out to the home. Giulia replies within 48 hours.
As a finish she applies a protective varnish: the mural lasts a lifetime, and the wall wipes clean with a damp sponge, leaving the paint intact. That matters in a corridor where wheelchairs and trolleys go by.
Who commissions it, and from which budget

Can a trompe-l’oeil be painted at the end of a corridor?
Yes, and it is the subject that works best at the end of a corridor. Can residents take part?
Yes, and it is often what activities coordinators ask for. Giulia can have someone lay a colour, add a detail or sign the bottom of the wall, or simply paint in front of the group during the day’s session. She speaks four languages and works at the pace of the house.
Can several homes in the same group be painted?
Yes. Giulia quotes each home separately, with one quote per site and an invoice made out to each. The design can be adapted from one home to the next, or different everywhere: a subject drawn from the region of each house works very well.
Who paints the mural?
Giulia Dal Bon, a painter trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, where she also studied restoration. She exhibits her paintings in art galleries and paints murals in seventeen European countries. Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, Domus and Sky Arte have written about her work, and her mural of more than twenty metres dedicated to Gaber and Jannacci can be seen in Milan. She paints with a brush, layer after layer, and signs the work if you wish.
