Practical questions before commissioning a mural

The questions that come up most often.

Can I see the design before saying yes ?

Yes. Before any agreement, Giulia shows you the project as an image on your own wall, with a detailed price. Several sketches are proposed to you before the project is confirmed.

What kind of mural works well in Venice ?

In Venice, many palazzi still have a piano nobile with original frescoes, a setting well suited to detailed designs and classic-style trompe-l'oeil. Everything is painted by hand in acrylic, with no wallpaper and no printing.

Does it damage the wall ?

No damage. In Venice, lagoon humidity is a recurring feature of the historic centre: Giulia assesses the wall before quoting, to check for damp or salt damage.

Venice between the lagoon and the palazzi

Here, a mural works when it dialogues with period frescoes, high ceilings, and light reflected off the water.

Homes and apartments

Living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, entrances, and the piano nobile of the palazzi. Example: a living room wall of 8 sqm in a detailed design, around 2 000 €.

Boutique hotels and restaurants

Boutique hotels, restaurants, and shops near the Grand Canal. In a market where competitors look alike, a mural is one of the few things that cannot be copied. Example: a boutique hotel wall of 12 sqm in a detailed design, around 3 000 €.

Facades and exterior walls

Lagoon humidity calls for a case-by-case assessment before painting an exterior. For a facade visible from a street or canal, the owner's or the building association's approval is usually enough, plus a notice to the town hall in a protected zone, a common situation in the historic centre. From 150 € per sqm, plus scaffolding if needed.

A mural for this place

Venice is a lagoon city, where many palazzi still have a piano nobile with original frescoes and high ceilings. Requests come from historic apartments, boutique hotels near the Grand Canal, and shops looking for a distinctive element. Humidity is a recurring feature of the historic centre: Giulia assesses the wall before quoting, to check the state of the plaster. Giulia travels easily to paint: she comes on site to see the wall, or works first from photos and measurements.

What changes the quote: the surface to paint, how complex the design is, interior or exterior, the condition of the wall before preparation, the height and whether scaffolding is needed and the timeline.

Frequently asked questions about murals in Venice

How much does a mural cost in Venice ?

The price is per square metre: 150 € for a simple motif, 250 € for a detailed design, 350 € for trompe-l’oeil or a ceiling. A small mural in a bedroom costs less than a facade that needs preparation and scaffolding. The quote is free.

How long does it take ?

The time depends on the project: it is discussed together based on the wall and the subject. As a general guide, a simple motif takes less time than a very detailed design or a large surface.

Does a mural last outdoors in Venice ?

Yes, with surface preparation suited to the lagoon's humidity. Exterior work in Venice needs a case-by-case assessment of the wall, to check the state of the plaster before painting.

Is permission needed to paint a facade ?

For an interior wall, no. For a facade visible from a street or canal, you usually need the owner's or the building association's approval, and a notice to the town hall: Venice and its lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are almost entirely protected. Giulia explains the process before starting.

Can a mural be changed or removed later ?

Yes. A mural painted in acrylic can be covered like any wall paint. It can also be reworked or extended later.
