Practical questions before commissioning a mural

The questions that come up most often.

Can I see the design before deciding?

Yes. Before any agreement, Giulia shows you the project as an image on your own wall, with the detailed price. Several sketches are proposed to you before the project is confirmed.

What type of mural works well in Paris?

In private mansions and historic apartments, a botanical motif or a discreet trompe l'oeil work well with panelling and high ceilings. Everything is hand-painted with acrylic colours, no wallpaper or printing involved.

Will it damage the wall?

No damage at all. Acrylic paint adheres to an already painted or plastered wall, with no stripping or heavy primer needed. And if you change your mind in ten years, a coat of paint is enough to cover it.

Paris, between private mansions and galleries

Here, a mural works when it plays off the history of Parisian interiors, without trying to imitate their style.

Apartments and private mansions

Living rooms, bedrooms, entrances in historic buildings in the centre. Example: a 10 m² living room wall in a detailed subject, around €2,500.

Galleries and boutiques

Exhibition spaces and shops near the Marais, where contemporary art galleries have settled in recent years. Example: a 15 m² gallery wall in a detailed subject, around €3,750.

Facades and exterior walls

An exterior wall visible from the street generally needs the owner's or building association's agreement. From €150 per m², plus scaffolding if needed.

A mural for this place

The Marais has become in recent years one of the main centres of contemporary art in Paris: the capital's most prestigious galleries have settled here, often inside former private mansions overlooking hidden courtyards. The Malraux law has helped preserve the district's historic urban fabric while adapting it to the demands of contemporary art; the Picasso Museum, housed in the Hôtel Salé, and the nearby Centre Pompidou add to the area's cultural prestige. Paris also has a very lively street art scene, from Belleville to the banks of the Seine. Requests come from historic apartments, galleries and shops looking for a distinctive feature. Giulia travels easily to paint: she comes to see the wall in person, or works first from photos and measurements.

Frequently asked questions about murals in Paris

Can I see the design before deciding?

Yes. Before any agreement, Giulia shows you the project as an image on your own wall, with the detailed price. Several sketches are proposed to you before the project is confirmed.

How much does a mural cost in Paris?

The rate is per square metre: €150 for a simple motif, €250 for a detailed subject, €350 for a trompe l'oeil or ceiling. The quote is free.

How long does the work take?

The timeline depends on the project: we discuss it together based on the wall and the subject. As a general guide, a simple motif takes less time than a very detailed subject or a large surface.

Does a mural hold up outdoors in Paris?

Yes, with surface preparation suited to the Parisian climate. The best period for an exterior mural runs from spring to autumn.

Do I need permission to paint a facade?

For an interior wall, no. For a facade visible from the street, you generally need the owner's or building association's agreement, and a notice to the municipality if the building sits in a protected zone: many historic buildings in the Marais are protected. Giulia explains the process before starting.

Can a mural be changed or removed later?

Yes. A mural painted in acrylic can be painted over like any regular wall paint. It can also be reworked or extended later on.
