What Giulia restores
A painted ceiling, a vault, the decor of a stairwell, a frieze under a cornice, a trompe-l’oeil, an old fresco, a wall that has suffered from damp or a leak: in the villas and old buildings of the French Riviera, Monaco, Liguria and Milan these decors are everywhere, often under a layer of dust or paint. Giulia Dal Bon recovers them by brush, and she always starts by looking: send photos, and she tells you within 48 hours what she can do with them.
Often cleaning alone brings the colours back. A ceiling yellowed by decades of smoke or heating recovers its original tones through cleaning alone, and Giulia repaints only what is truly missing: you pay for the useful work. Where the decor has disappeared, she reconstructs the missing parts from what remains on the wall, from the drawing that can be made out under the damaged layer and from old photographs when you have them. An interrupted frieze regains its continuity, an erased face returns modelled on the others of the same decor, and you see the reconstruction on the sketch before she paints it.
In a stairwell or on a ceiling, a decor is sometimes kept on one wall and gone from the other. Giulia restores what exists and extends the decor in the same spirit, with the same motifs and the same palette, so the whole reads as one piece; the quote sets out the two parts separately. And if you would like a new decor beside the old one, she also paints murals, from line drawing to trompe-l’oeil.
How a restoration goes
Everything starts with a test on a sample area. Giulia cleans and retouches a few square centimetres in a discreet corner, you see what the decor becomes again, and you decide from what is in front of you. It is the method she learned at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, where she studied restoration: look first, act second, and always reversibly on what is old. The test is included in the price.
The place stays lived in during the work. Giulia uses odourless acrylic for the retouching, protects floors and furniture, and a lobby stays usable, a restaurant keeps serving. When the ceiling is high she works on scaffolding, put up and taken down by her or by your contractor, as you prefer, and priced in the quote. The timing is written there too, measured after the sample-area test; she gives plenty of notice if the schedule moves, and for a co-owned building she fits in with the dates of the meeting or of other works.
