Murals shaped for the Amalfi Coast

In Vietri sul Mare, hand-painted ceramics are a tradition of nearly seven hundred years, documented at least since the fifteenth century. The majolica domes of the church of San Giovanni Battista and of the coast’s bell towers carry its colours: lemon yellow, sea blue, emerald green. Since 1997 the whole Coast has been a UNESCO site. Here, colour on walls is part of the landscape.

What Giulia brings. Giulia is a painter, trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. She exhibits her paintings in art galleries and also paints on walls. Corriere della Sera, Domus and Sky Arte have written about her work, and her mural of over twenty metres dedicated to Gaber and Jannacci can be seen in Milan. The wall is her favourite canvas because it truly becomes part of a place, a unique work made to tell your story.

Giulia also paints live at weddings in the area: the canvas advances during the cocktail hour and stays with the couple at the end. See live wedding painting.

On the Amalfi Coast, Giulia also paints live in front of an audience: a wedding, a private evening or a brand event. The canvas starts blank and ends signed, ready to hang. From 950 € for a wedding, from 400 € for a performance. See live painting →

Your questions, before commissioning

A photo of the wall, its approximate dimensions and the idea you have in mind are enough to receive a quote.

How much does a mural cost on the Amalfi Coast?

Giulia Dal Bon charges by the square metre: 150 € for a line drawing or a simple motif, 250 € for a fully painted subject, 350 € for trompe-l’oeil or a ceiling. A small mural in a bedroom costs less than a facade that needs preparation and scaffolding. The quote is free: see all prices.

How does it work to have a wall painted shaped for the Amalfi Coast?

Write to Giulia Dal Bon on WhatsApp or by email, even if the idea is still vague: she replies within 48 hours. Send her a photo of the wall to be painted, she draws a sketch straight onto your photo, you tell her what you think, and the first two sketches are free. Once the sketch is approved, she sends you the quote, from 150 € per sqm shaped for the Amalfi Coast, and sets the date with you. She then comes and paints the mural at your place shaped for the Amalfi Coast, by brush, and the place stays open while she works.

What does a mural quote shaped for the Amalfi Coast cover?

Giulia Dal Bon’s price per square metre includes the paint and materials, the first two sketches and the protective varnish as a finish. While she paints, you tell her what you think, and she adjusts. Added to the quote, when needed, are the scaffolding for a facade and travel costs, agreed together. The quote is free and arrives within 48 hours; a deposit of about 100 € for materials confirms the date, and the balance is settled at the end.

What kind of mural works well on the Amalfi Coast?

In villas with a view and coastal hotels, a botanical motif, a seascape or a perspective trompe-l’oeil sit well on pale render. Everything is painted with a brush, in odourless acrylic.

Does it damage the wall?

The paint goes onto the plaster already in place. Dusting it down is usually enough. If the surface has cracks or rising damp, Giulia flags it before quoting.

Can I see the design before saying yes?

Always. You get a sketch mounted on the photo of your wall, to scale, with the quote. You confirm whenever you are ready, and she adjusts the design with you.

What subject works well for a mural on the Amalfi Coast?

The subjects that work here: floral and botanical work for bedrooms and living rooms, landscapes for living spaces and terraces, trompe l’oeil for facades and ceilings. Everything is drawn to measure: Giulia offers two free sketches from your idea, and you refine it together until the subject is yours. For a wall on the Amalfi Coast, the guide What subject to choose for a mural goes through the subjects room by room.

What is the difference between a hand-painted mural and spray-painted graffiti?

A graffiti artist works with spray cans, and the line is fast and graphic. Giulia Dal Bon paints with a brush: the layers go on one after another, which allows gradients, fine detail and trompe l’oeil. A mural on the Amalfi Coast becomes a painting made directly on the wall, by hand. While she works, people take the time to watch and take photos.

What do you call an artist who paints on walls?

A mural artist, a muralist, a wall artist or a decorative painter, and the art itself is called mural painting or wall art. Giulia Dal Bon comes from painting: trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, she exhibits her paintings in art galleries and paints commissioned murals with a brush. To have one painted, send her a photo of your wall: free quote within 48 hours.

Does a mural hold up outdoors on the Amalfi Coast?

Yes, with surface preparation and quartz paint, made for outdoor walls. On the Coast the sun is strong and the air is salty: an anti-salt varnish is added on request. Giulia sets the date with you on a spell of good weather.

Do I need permission to paint a facade on the Amalfi Coast?

An interior wall can be painted freely. For a facade visible from the street, you usually need the owner’s or the building association’s approval, and a notice to the town hall if the building is in a protected area. Giulia explains the process before starting.

How long does it take to paint a mural?

It depends on the surface, the level of detail and how easy the wall is to reach. Giulia gives the timing with the quote, within 48 hours, and gives plenty of notice if the schedule moves. The place keeps running while she works: the acrylic is odourless.

How long does a mural last?

The murals Giulia Dal Bon paints last a lifetime indoors: the paint becomes part of the plaster and lives as long as the wall. Outdoors, quartz paint is made for facades, and an anti-salt or anti-pollution varnish extends it further. And if one day you want a change, it can be painted over like any wall paint.

Other spaces

Ideas for spaces

The mural can be floral, vegetal, maritime, narrative, or more restrained. What matters most is the relationship between painting, surface, and the way the place is lived.

Homes and villas

Village houses, sea-facing apartments, entryways, staircases, and rooms where color can make the wall feel warmer and more alive.

Hotels, restaurants, and boutiques

Restaurants, small hotels, boutiques, and places that want atmosphere while keeping the honesty of the material and the light.

A mural made for this place

Other places naturally included on the Amalfi Coast

Within this coastal axis, Sorrento and Praiano also belong, with the same continuity of villas, hotels, entryways, terraces and pale walls where painting meets render and light.

Sorrento

Sorrento belongs here when the mural involves hotels, lemon groves, courtyards and rooms facing the gulf.

Praiano

Praiano belongs to the same group for villas, bedrooms, terraces and white walls suspended above the sea.

One continuous coast

The method stays the same across this part of Amalfi Coast: the mural begins from the real surface, the way the wall is seen, the rhythm of the place, and the way people move through it.

Where Giulia works on the Amalfi Coast

On the Amalfi Coast, whether it is a house, a villa, a second home or a flat, Giulia paints on an interior wall : the living room, the children’s bedroom and the bedroom. She also paints the kitchen, the bathroom, the entrance, the hallway and the stairwell. The ceiling is painted too: that is the €350 per sqm band, with trompe-l’oeil. Outside, she switches to quartz paint on the exterior facade and the garden wall. In a rented place, she paints on a mobile panel that you take with you.

In a restaurant, a pizzeria, a café or a bar on the Amalfi Coast, she paints the dining-room wall, and the tables stay laid. In a boutique and a shop, the painted window is seen from the street, and the shutter stays painted after closing. In a hotel and a B&B, the painted wall gives each room its own subject. In a hair salon, a spa and a gym, she paints the walls of the cabins and of the main room. In a medical practice, a waiting room and a nursery, she paints the reception wall and the corridor. In an office and a showroom, she paints the wall the teams walk past every day. A vaulted cellar takes the same paint, right up to the ceiling.

The subject is decided together. A landscape opens up the far end of a room, a floral or botanical motif runs along a wall, a painted sky fills a ceiling, a perspective trompe-l’oeil draws a window on a solid wall. Giulia also paints figures, animals, lettering, painted signs, and reproduces an existing work when you ask her to.

Possible subjects on the Amalfi Coast: the painted majolica of Vietri, the houses stacked above the sea, the terraced lemon groves and the domes. And always the trompe-l’oeil window, the botanical motif and the painted sky on a ceiling.

Very different words lead to the same search: mural, wall mural, artistic painting on a wall, wall decoration, mural decoration, decorative painting. Trompe-l’oeil is one form of it, a hand-painted wall and a drawing on a wall are others, and some look for a painting made directly on the wall. Behind those words, one craft on the Amalfi Coast: mural artist, muralist, wall artist, decorative painter.

The Amalfi Coast runs from Vietri to Positano, with villas, hotels and terraces where painted ceramics have coloured the walls for seven hundred years: tall packed houses, trompe-l’oeil painted facades, seafront shops.

Giulia also travels to Amalfi, to Positano, to Ravello and to Capri.

She also works in Sorrento, Praiano, Furore, Conca dei Marini, Atrani, Minori, Maiori, Cetara, Erchie, Salerno, Massa Lubrense, Sant’Agnello, Piano di Sorrento, Vico Equense, Nerano, Anacapri, Scala, Tramonti and Agerola.
