Murals shaped for Sardinia

On 27 May 1969 the Dioniso group painted the first wall in Orgosolo. In 1975 the teacher Francesco del Casino, a Sienese settled in the village, took up the work again with his students. The village now counts around one hundred and fifty murals, and the practice has spread to San Sperate, Villamar and Serramanna. Sardinia is where the Italian mural tradition began.

What Giulia brings. Giulia is a painter, trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. She exhibits her paintings in art galleries and also paints on walls. Corriere della Sera, Domus and Sky Arte have written about her work, and her mural of over twenty metres dedicated to Gaber and Jannacci can be seen in Milan. The wall is her favourite canvas because it truly becomes part of a place, a unique work made to tell your story.

In Sardinia, Giulia also paints live in front of an audience: a wedding, a concert or a company evening. The canvas starts blank and ends signed, ready to hang. From 950 € for a wedding, from 900 € for a company evening, from 400 € for a performance at a concert. For a wedding, the reception venues are gathered on the live wedding painting in Sardinia page.

Giulia Dal Bon paints by the square metre: 150 € for a line drawing or a simple motif, 250 € for a fully painted subject, 350 € for trompe-l’oeil or a ceiling. A small mural in a bedroom costs less than a facade that needs preparation and scaffolding. The quote is free: see all prices.

How do I get a mural painted in my home shaped for Sardinia?

Write to Giulia Dal Bon on WhatsApp or by email, even if the idea is still vague: she replies within 48 hours. Send her a photo of the wall to be painted, she draws a sketch straight onto your photo, you tell her what you think, and the first two sketches are free. Once the sketch is approved, she sends you the quote, from 150 € per sqm shaped for Sardinia, and sets the date with you. She then comes and paints the mural at your place shaped for Sardinia, by brush, and the place stays open while she works.

Can a Sardinian landscape be painted on a wall?

Yes. The Italian painted wall was born in Sardinia: at Orgosolo, on 27 May 1969, and the village now counts around a hundred and fifty. People ask for the painted lanes of Orgosolo, the water of the Costa Smeralda, the pink granite and maquis of Gallura, the prickly pears, the fishing boats of Catalan Alghero. Giulia Dal Bon paints with a brush, on site. The price follows the technique: 150 € per sqm as a line drawing, 250 € for a fully painted view.

What does the price of a mural shaped for Sardinia include?

Giulia Dal Bon’s price per square metre includes the paint and materials, the first two sketches and the protective varnish as a finish. While she paints, you tell her what you think, and she adjusts. Added to the quote, when needed, are the scaffolding for a facade and travel costs, agreed together. The quote is free and arrives within 48 hours; a deposit of about 100 € for materials confirms the date, and the balance is settled at the end.

What kind of mural works well in Sardinia?

In village houses and coastal villas, a botanical motif, a landscape or a scene of local life work well on pale render. Everything is painted with a brush, in odourless acrylic.

Does it damage the wall?

The paint goes onto the plaster already in place. Dusting it down is usually enough. If the surface has cracks or rising damp, Giulia flags it before quoting.

Can I see the design before saying yes?

Always. You get a sketch mounted on the photo of your wall, to scale, with the quote. You confirm whenever you are ready, and she adjusts the design with you.

What subject works well for a mural in Sardinia?

The subjects that work here: floral and botanical work for bedrooms and living rooms, landscapes for living spaces and terraces, trompe l’oeil for facades and ceilings. Everything is drawn to measure: Giulia offers two free sketches from your idea, and you refine it together until the subject is yours. For a wall in Sardinia, the guide What subject to choose for a mural goes through the subjects room by room.

What is the difference between a hand-painted mural and spray-painted graffiti?

A graffiti artist works with spray cans, and the line is fast and graphic. Giulia Dal Bon paints with a brush: the layers go on one after another, which allows gradients, fine detail and trompe l’oeil. A mural in Sardinia becomes a painting made directly on the wall, by hand. While she works, people take the time to watch and take photos.

What do you call an artist who paints on walls?

A mural artist, a muralist, a wall artist or a decorative painter, and the art itself is called mural painting or wall art. Giulia Dal Bon comes from painting: trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, she exhibits her paintings in art galleries and paints commissioned murals with a brush. To have one painted, send her a photo of your wall: free quote within 48 hours.

Does a mural hold up outdoors in Sardinia?

Yes, with surface preparation and quartz paint, made for outdoor walls. In Sardinia the sun is strong, the wind constant and near the sea the air is salty: an anti-salt varnish is added on request. Giulia sets the date with you on a spell of good weather.

Do I need permission to paint a facade in Sardinia?

An interior wall can be painted freely. For a facade visible from the street, you usually need the owner’s or the building association’s approval, and a notice to the town hall if the building is in a protected area. Giulia explains the process before starting.

How long does it take to paint a mural?

It depends on the surface, the level of detail and how easy the wall is to reach. Giulia gives the timing with the quote, within 48 hours, and gives plenty of notice if the schedule moves. The place keeps running while she works: the acrylic is odourless.

How long does a mural last?

The murals Giulia Dal Bon paints last a lifetime indoors: the paint becomes part of the plaster and lives as long as the wall. Outdoors, quartz paint is made for facades, and an anti-salt or anti-pollution varnish extends it further. And if one day you want a change, it can be painted over like any wall paint.

Other spaces

The other places Giulia paints, her portfolio and the towns nearby.

Ideas for spaces

The mural can be floral, vegetal, maritime, narrative, or more restrained. What matters most is the relationship between painting, surface, and the way the place is lived.

Homes and villas

Village houses, sea-facing apartments, entryways, staircases, and rooms where color can make the wall feel warmer and more alive.

Hotels, restaurants, and boutiques

Restaurants, small hotels, boutiques, and places that want atmosphere while keeping the honesty of the material and the light.

A mural made for this place

Other places naturally included in Sardinia

Within this Sardinian axis, Cagliari and Alghero also belong, with the same continuity of homes, small hotels, entryways, facades and passage spaces where painting meets stone and plaster.

Cagliari

Cagliari belongs here when the mural involves facades in the Castello quarter, courtyards, small businesses and venues in the centre.

Alghero

Alghero belongs to the same group for the houses of the old town, hotels, bedrooms and pale walls facing the sea.

One continuous coast

The method stays the same across this part of Sardinia: the mural begins from the real surface, the way the wall is seen, the rhythm of the place, and the way people move through it.

Where Giulia works in Sardinia

In Sardinia, in a house, a villa, a second home or a flat, Giulia paints on an interior wall : the living room, the children’s bedroom and the bedroom. She also paints the kitchen, the bathroom, the entrance, the hallway and the stairwell. A ceiling is painted the same way, from the scaffold. Outside, on the exterior facade and the garden wall, she works in quartz paint. She also paints on a mobile panel, when the wall belongs to someone else.

In a restaurant, a pizzeria, a café or a bar in Sardinia, she paints the dining-room wall, and service carries on while she works. In a boutique and a shop, the painted window is seen from the street, and the shutter stays painted after closing. In a hotel and a B&B, she paints the lobbies, the corridors and the rooms. For a hair salon, a spa and a gym, she paints the cabin, changing-room and reception walls. In a medical practice, a waiting room and a nursery, she paints the wall you face while you wait. In an office and a showroom, she paints the reception wall and the meeting rooms. A cellar is painted too, right down its stairs.

As for the subject, Giulia draws what you want to see on that particular wall: a landscape, a floral or botanical motif, a painted sky on a ceiling, a perspective trompe-l’oeil, figures, animals, lettering or a painted sign. She also reproduces an existing work. Two sketches come to you before the first brushstroke.

The craft goes by several names, and each of them is right about something. Mural and wall mural speak of the wall, wall decoration and mural decoration speak of the room, decorative painting speaks of the gesture, trompe-l’oeil speaks of the effect. A hand-painted wall, a drawing on a wall, a painting made directly on the wall: still the same thing. In Sardinia, it is called a mural artist, a muralist, a wall artist, a decorative painter.

Sardinia brings together coastlines, painted villages and a mountainous interior: tall packed houses, trompe-l’oeil painted facades, seafront shops.

Giulia also travels to Porto Cervo, to Cagliari, to Alghero and to Olbia.

She also works in Cagliari, Alghero, Olbia, Sassari, Nuoro, Orgosolo, San Sperate, Bosa, Castelsardo, Stintino, Oristano, La Maddalena, Palau, Santa Teresa Gallura, Arzachena, Baja Sardinia, San Teodoro, Budoni, Villasimius, Pula, Chia and Carloforte.
