What a wall can say

A mural with a message turns an idea into an image, on a wall that everyone sees as they walk past. Giulia Dal Bon composes it with you from three things: what your organisation wants to say, the place where the wall stands, and the people who will pass it every day. The message can live in a hand-painted sentence, in a symbol, in flowers, in hands held together or a tree, or in the face of a local figure.

A wall can carry respect, equality between girls and boys, peace, kindness, nature, a welcome for everyone or the memory of a neighbourhood. Whether it is a community mural on a town square, an anti-bullying mural in a school corridor or a values wall in an office, Giulia paints the message you have chosen, at a size that reads from across the street.

In Milan, the mural of more than twenty metres that Giulia dedicated to Gaber and Jannacci pays tribute to two musicians of the city, in a public space.

The painted sentence at the heart of the mural

Example of a mural with a message: Giulia Dal Bon painted large line-drawn flowers beneath a sentence in red letters, and the audience applauds in front of the wall.

When the message fits into a few words, Giulia Dal Bon paints them into the mural with a brush. She draws the lettering by hand: the size of the letters, their colour and their place on the wall already show in the sketch set on the photo of your wall, and you approve the design before Giulia paints.

The sentence is chosen with you and checked on the sketch, in the local language or in several: Giulia speaks Italian, French, English and Spanish. Around the words she paints what carries them, large line-drawn flowers, a landscape or silhouettes, and the sentence is priced with the mural, per square metre, on the price table.

For a council, a school, a charity or a company

For a council, the mural marks a day that matters: 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, 8 March, International Women’s Day, the town’s own festival or the opening of a new building. The town of Segrate, in Italy, commissioned Giulia to paint the bowls-club house, together with the association FGA, for its town festival “Io sono Segrate”. Giulia draws up a detailed quote and an invoice in the council’s name.

For a school, the wall supports what teachers pass on all year: respect, equality between girls and boys, peace, kindness. An anti-bullying mural finds its place in the playground or the entrance hall, and the school can unveil it on a day it has chosen. Teachers choose the words and the design with Giulia, and they review them together on the sketch.

For a charity, a service club or a community centre, the mural gives an image to what the organisation does every day, on its facade, in its reception room or on a wall the council lends it. Giulia makes out the quote and the invoice to the charity.

For a company, a values mural is painted in reception, in the meeting room or in the break area: the words chosen with the teams, drawn and painted by hand by Giulia, in the company colours. Teams stay at their desks while she paints, thanks to odourless acrylic. Giulia also paints murals for offices and showrooms.

The date is set with you when the quote is agreed, and the mural is finished for the day you are preparing: the council, the school or the charity then holds its unveiling ceremony in front of a completed wall, with its guests.

While Giulia paints, local people take the time to look, admire and photograph the wall. In Segrate, a local newspaper gave a full page to the “Io sono Segrate” festival and to the flowering meadow painted by Giulia.

Outdoors she paints with quartz paint, all year round, on a dry wall in mild temperatures, and she can add an anti-graffiti varnish on a wall that can be reached from the street. As a finish, Giulia applies a protective varnish: the mural lasts a lifetime, and the wall wipes clean with a damp sponge while the paint stays intact.

Your questions, before you order

She paints in the local language or in several, as she speaks Italian, French, English and Spanish. The sentence is priced with the mural, per square metre, from 150 € per sqm.

What messages can a mural carry?

Giulia Dal Bon paints the message chosen by the organisation that commissions the mural: respect, equality between girls and boys, peace, kindness, nature, a welcome for everyone or the memory of a place. The message takes the form of a hand-painted sentence, a symbol, flowers, hands held together or a face, and Giulia composes it with the place and the people who walk past the wall. The sketch, drawn on the photo of the wall, shows the message in place, and the first two sketches are free. Prices start at 150 € per sqm.

Can the mural be ready for 25 November or 8 March?

Yes. Giulia Dal Bon sets the date with you when the quote is agreed, and the mural is finished for the day you are preparing: 25 November, 8 March, a school’s anti-bullying day, the town festival or a charity’s anniversary. The earlier the date is known, the more calmly the message and the sketch can be chosen. Indoors, odourless acrylic keeps the place open; outdoors, Giulia paints all year round, on a dry wall in mild temperatures.

Who are the quote and the invoice made out to?

To the council, the school, the charity or the company that commissions the mural. Giulia Dal Bon draws up a quote detailed line by line, with the surface, the technique, the materials and the protection, and an invoice in the organisation’s name. The town of Segrate, in Italy, has already commissioned her mural on the bowls-club house, for its town festival “Io sono Segrate”. The quote is free and arrives within 48 hours, and prices start at 150 € per sqm.

Who chooses the message painted on the wall?

The organisation that commissions the mural chooses the message: the council, the school, the charity or the company. Giulia Dal Bon listens, suggests a way of turning it into an image and draws the sketch on the photo of the wall, with the sentence, the symbols and the colours. You tell her what you think, and she adjusts until the sketch is approved. Before writing to Giulia, the organisation can gather ideas from its pupils, its residents or its staff.

Can a company have its values painted on a wall?

Yes. Giulia Dal Bon paints a company values mural in reception, in the meeting room or in the break area: the words chosen with the teams, drawn by hand and framed by a design in the company colours. Teams stay at their desks while she paints, thanks to odourless acrylic. The quote and the invoice are made out to the company, from 150 € per sqm, and the quote is free within 48 hours. For a team evening, Giulia also creates live paintings for companies.

Does the building stay open while Giulia paints?

Yes. Indoors, Giulia Dal Bon paints in odourless acrylic: the school, the town hall, the offices or the reception room stay open while she works, and she protects the floor around the wall. While she paints, pupils, residents or staff take the time to look, admire and photograph the wall. The date is set with you when the quote is agreed, free within 48 hours, and prices start at 150 € per sqm.

Will the mural last on an outdoor wall?

Yes. Outdoors, Giulia Dal Bon paints with quartz paint, made for facades, with an anti-pollution varnish on a wall exposed to traffic and an anti-graffiti varnish on a wall that can be reached from the street. As a finish, Giulia applies a protective varnish: the mural lasts a lifetime, and the wall wipes clean with a damp sponge while the paint stays intact. She paints outdoors all year round, on a dry wall in mild temperatures.

Who is the artist who paints the mural?

Giulia Dal Bon is a painter, trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. She exhibits her paintings in art galleries and also paints on walls. Corriere della Sera, Domus and Sky Arte have written about her work, and her mural of over twenty metres dedicated to Gaber and Jannacci can be seen in Milan. For the town of Segrate, she painted the bowls-club house. She paints with a brush and signs the mural if you wish.
