Practical questions before commissioning a mural

The questions that come up most often.

Can I see the design before deciding?

Yes. Before any agreement, Giulia shows you the project as an image on your own wall, with the detailed price. Several sketches are proposed to you before the project is confirmed.

What type of mural works well in Geneva?

In residences in the Champel district or in offices in the centre, a discreet botanical motif or an elegant trompe l'oeil fit well with the city's reserved atmosphere. Everything is hand-painted with acrylic colours, no wallpaper or printing involved.

Will it damage the wall?

No damage at all. Acrylic paint adheres to an already painted or plastered wall, with no stripping or heavy primer needed. And if you change your mind in ten years, a coat of paint is enough to cover it.

Geneva, between the Old Town and discretion

Here, a mural works when it plays off the discreet elegance of Geneva interiors, without ever being intrusive.

Residences

Living rooms, bedrooms, entrances in residences in the leafy district of Champel or in the Old Town. Example: a 10 m² living room wall in a detailed subject, around €2,500.

Offices and galleries

Offices in the centre and galleries in the Bains district, the city's most avant-garde area for contemporary art. Example: a 15 m² office wall in a detailed subject, around €3,750.

Facades and exterior walls

An exterior wall visible from the street generally needs the owner's or building association's agreement. From €150 per m², plus scaffolding if needed.

A mural for this place

Geneva's Old Town, the largest historic centre in Switzerland, stands on a hill overlooking the harbour: of Celtic origin, it became a strategic Roman city and later the heart of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, earning it the nickname "Protestant Rome". The district is centred on the Place du Bourg-de-Four and St Pierre Cathedral. Geneva is best known for its banks specialising in wealth management, while the Bains district remains the city's most avant-garde area for contemporary art. Requests come from private residences, offices and galleries looking for a distinctive feature. Giulia travels easily to paint: she comes to see the wall in person, or works first from photos and measurements.

Frequently asked questions about murals in Geneva

Can I see the design before deciding?

Yes. Before any agreement, Giulia shows you the project as an image on your own wall, with the detailed price. Several sketches are proposed to you before the project is confirmed.

How much does a mural cost in Geneva?

The rate is per square metre: €150 for a simple motif, €250 for a detailed subject, €350 for a trompe l'oeil or ceiling. The quote is free.

How long does the work take?

The timeline depends on the project: we discuss it together based on the wall and the subject. As a general guide, a simple motif takes less time than a very detailed subject or a large surface.

Does a mural hold up outdoors in Geneva?

Yes, with surface preparation suited to the Swiss climate. The best period for an exterior mural runs from late spring to early autumn.

Do I need permission to paint a facade?

For an interior wall, no. For a facade visible from the street, you generally need the owner's or building association's agreement, and a notice to the municipality if the building sits in a protected zone: many buildings in the Old Town are protected. Giulia explains the process before starting.

Can a mural be changed or removed later?

Yes. A mural painted in acrylic can be painted over like any regular wall paint. It can also be reworked or extended later on.
