I come and paint at your place in Arles, by brush, and the place stays open while I work.
In 1888 Van Gogh left Paris to settle in Arles, where he rented the Yellow House as his studio and painted it in September of that year. He hoped to gather other painters there and found what he called the Studio of the South; Gauguin joined him, and the venture ended in December 1888. In Arles, Giulia paints the walls of period houses, apartments and venues.
What Giulia brings to Arles. Van Gogh’s idea in Arles was simple: a place where painters would work together, in the light of the South. Giulia arrives with her own part, vivid colour and painting made by hand on a wall that stays. She loves what painters drew from this light, and builds each mural with the person who entrusts it to her. Giulia is a painter, trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. She exhibits her paintings in art galleries and also paints on walls. Corriere della Sera, Domus and Sky Arte have written about her work, and her mural of over twenty metres dedicated to Gaber and Jannacci can be seen in Milan. The wall is her favourite canvas because it truly becomes part of a place, a unique work made to tell your story.
Giulia also paints live at weddings: she sets up her easel during the cocktail hour and the painting stays with the couple. From 950 €, see live wedding painting in Provence.

On 26 June 2021 Frank Gehry’s tower opened at the Parc des Ateliers: 11,000 stainless-steel panels, a base inspired by the Roman amphitheatre and a silhouette that quotes The Starry Night, painted by Van Gogh in 1889 at Saint-Rémy. Maja Hoffmann installed LUMA Arles there, in the former railway workshops.
Arles is therefore a town that built a tower for a painting. Giulia Dal Bon paints there with a brush, in the houses of La Roquette, the hotels, the restaurants, the mas of the Camargue and the Alpilles, using odourless acrylic indoors and quartz paint in the sun. From 150 € per sqm, free quote within 48 hours.
Giulia also paints live in Arles. For a festival, an opening, a concert or a wedding, she sets up her easel and the painting takes shape in front of your guests, signed and taken home the same evening. From 950 € for a wedding, from 400 € for a performance. See live painting →
A photo of the wall, its approximate dimensions and the idea you have in mind are enough to receive a quote.
The rate is per square metre: €150 for a line drawing or a simple motif, €250 for a fully painted subject, €350 for a trompe l’oeil or ceiling. The quote is free: see all prices.
Write to Giulia Dal Bon on WhatsApp or by email, even if the idea is still vague: she replies within 48 hours. Send her a photo of the wall to be painted, she draws a sketch straight onto your photo, you tell her what you think, and the first two sketches are free. Once the sketch is approved, she sends you the quote, from 150 € per sqm in Arles, and sets the date with you. She then comes and paints the mural at your place in Arles, by brush, and the place stays open while she works.
With Giulia Dal Bon, the price per square metre includes the paint and materials, the first two sketches and the protective varnish as a finish. While she paints, you tell her what you think, and she adjusts. Added to the quote, when needed, are the scaffolding for a facade and travel costs, agreed together. The quote is free and arrives within 48 hours; a deposit of about 100 € for materials confirms the date, and the balance is settled at the end.
Giulia Dal Bon, a painter trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. She paints murals by brush in homes, bedrooms, bathrooms, on terraces, pool walls and facades, and travels in Arles as she does across Europe. Send her a photo of the wall, its approximate dimensions and your idea, however loose: she replies within 48 hours with a quote and a first proposal. The first two sketches are free.
Always. You receive a sketch set on a photo of your own wall, to scale, together with the quote. The first two sketches are free: Giulia shows the work in progress, you give your opinion, and she adjusts. You confirm when you are ready.
The paint goes onto the plaster already in place. In most cases a dusting down is all that is needed before starting. If the surface has cracks or rising damp, Giulia points it out before quoting and proposes the preparation required. Indoors she uses an odourless acrylic: a child’s bedroom in use or a restaurant that stays open can both be painted. An acrylic mural can later be painted over like any wall paint, if you change your mind in ten years.
All year round. Indoors the odourless acrylic lets the room stay in use while she works, in January as in July. Outdoors she needs a dry wall and a mild temperature. Giulia sets the date with you when she quotes, within 48 hours, and gives plenty of notice if the schedule moves.
Yes, and the city lends itself to it. The Roman amphitheatre among the roofs, the Yellow House Van Gogh rented in 1888, the ochre facades of the centre and the banks of the Rhône. Giulia Dal Bon works with a brush, on the wall itself. A line-drawn view is 150 € per sqm, the same view fully painted from 250 €. Free quote within 48 hours.
In Arles, period houses and courtyards lend themselves to Mediterranean botanical motifs, figurative subjects or a trompe l’oeil that plays with the strong light. Everything is painted with a brush, in odourless acrylic. For a mural in Arles, the possible subjects, room by room, are gathered in the guide What subject to choose for a mural.
Spray can and brush give two different results. The brush works in layers, which makes gradients, fine detail and trompe l’oeil possible: that is why a mural can be looked at like a painting. In Arles, Giulia Dal Bon paints by hand, in odourless acrylic indoors and quartz paint outdoors. A painting made by hand shows, and it stands out all the more today.
A muralist, or a decorative painter; the word fresco painter exists too, for the old technique. In Arles, that is the work of Giulia Dal Bon: trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, she exhibits her paintings in art galleries and paints commissioned murals with a brush. People also search for it as mural painting, wall mural or hand-painted wall. Send her a photo of your wall: free quote within 48 hours.
Yes, with surface preparation and paints made for outdoor use. The mistral and strong sun call for a UV-resistant finish and a well-secured surface.
An interior wall can be painted freely. For a facade visible from the street, you generally need the owner’s or building association’s agreement, and a notice to the municipality if the building sits in a protected zone: many buildings in the historic centre are protected. Giulia explains the process before starting.
It depends on the surface, the level of detail and how easy the wall is to reach. Giulia gives the timing with the quote, within 48 hours, and gives plenty of notice if the schedule moves. The place keeps running while she works: the acrylic is odourless.
The murals Giulia Dal Bon paints last a lifetime indoors: the paint becomes part of the plaster and lives as long as the wall. Outdoors, quartz paint is made for facades, and an anti-salt or anti-pollution varnish extends it further. And if one day you want a change, it can be painted over like any wall paint.

The 20-metre-plus wall for Gaber and Jannacci, in Milan, in the press
Giulia Dal Bon, trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan.
In Arles, Giulia paints on an interior wall : the living room, the bedroom and the kitchen. She also paints the bathroom, the entrance and the hallway. A ceiling is painted like a wall, working overhead. Outside, she switches to quartz paint on the exterior facade. She also paints on a mobile panel, when the wall belongs to someone else.
The venues that welcome her in Arles range from apartment to boutique, with hotel in between.
In the historic centre, la Roquette and Trinquetaille, a photo of the wall is enough to start: Giulia draws the sketch onto it, and your idea comes together with her.
The subject is decided together. A landscape opens up the far end of a room, a floral or botanical motif runs along a wall, a painted sky fills a ceiling, a perspective trompe-l’oeil draws a window on a solid wall. Giulia also paints figures, animals, lettering, painted signs, and reproduces an existing work when you ask her to.
Possible subjects in Arles: the ochre facades of the centre and the banks of the Rhône, the Roman amphitheatre among the roofs, the Yellow House Van Gogh rented in 1888. And anywhere, a trompe-l’oeil window, botanicals and a painted sky find their place.
A mural is also called a wall mural, an artistic painting on a wall, a wall decoration. People say mural decoration, decorative painting, trompe-l’oeil, hand-painted wall, drawing on a wall, or a painting made directly on the wall: in every case someone paints the wall by hand, layer after layer. In Arles, the craft is called mural artist, muralist, wall artist or decorative painter, and it is Giulia Dal Bon’s.
In 1888 Van Gogh rented the Yellow House in Arles, which he painted in September that year, hoping to found the Studio of the South there.
Giulia also travels throughout Provence.
