The citadel of Calvi has stood on its headland since the thirteenth century, and in the sixteenth century Genoa had the motto Civitas Calvi semper fidelis set over its gate. In 1553 the Franco-Turkish fleet and the men of Sampiero Corso laid siege to Calvi. The black Christ of the cathedral of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was carried in procession along the ramparts, and the fleet lifted the siege: it has been called the Christ of Miracles ever since, and is still venerated to the right of the high altar. The church, burnt in 1481 and half destroyed in 1553, was rebuilt in 1570 inside the citadel.

Will a mural damage the wall?
