The Imperial Chapel was commissioned by Napoleon III and built between 1857 and 1859 to plans by Alexis Paccard, in Saint-Florent stone and in the neo-Renaissance style, to honour the last wishes of Cardinal Fesch. Jérôme Maglioli, municipal architect and painter-decorator from Ajaccio, painted its vaults in grisaille and trompe-l’oeil; the chapel was consecrated on 9 September 1860 and holds the tombs of the Bonapartes, including Letizia, the emperor’s mother.
