What Giulia paints during an opening

Live painting in a pedestrian street: one evening, Giulia Dal Bon paints among passers-by, who take the time to watch.
In the street one evening, Giulia paints among passers-by.

The place that opens becomes the subject of the painting: the shopfront and its window, the restaurant dining room laid for the first service, the hotel lobby, the showroom and the pieces it displays. Giulia sets up her easel near the entrance or in the heart of the room, where the guests pass, and the canvas grows while the evening unfolds.

The subject is prepared with you before the day, from your photos of the venue, your references and your palette: a signature product, the name over the door, the brand’s motif or the logo woven into the composition. Giulia first draws a sketch, included, which you approve, and on opening day the surprise stays whole for the guests.

During the opening, guests take the time to look, admire, take photos, and come back to see the canvas change between two conversations. For a shop that opens onto the street, the easel can also stand in front of the window, so passers-by discover the opening and the painting at the same moment.

The canvas stays in the place it portrays

An opening has one special feature: the painting made live stays in the very place it shows. After the evening, the canvas hangs at the shop’s reception, behind the restaurant bar, in the hotel lobby or in the director’s office. Giulia can add the opening date to it, and the signed painting is yours that same evening.

A standard size is finished on site during the evening. For a large format, Giulia completes the final touches and the varnish in the studio, and the handover date is written in the quote. While she paints, the scene also gives you photos and videos your teams can share.

Live painting in a hall of crystal chandeliers: the audience watches Giulia Dal Bon paint on stage beside the grand piano.
In a hall of crystal chandeliers, the guests admire Giulia’s canvas.

Giulia is a painter first and foremost, and she exhibits her paintings in art galleries. During a private view, she paints in the room while visitors discover the exhibition: the subject can answer the works on the walls, the venue itself, or follow the music of the evening.

The same idea works for the opening of a museum, a bookshop, a library or a festival, and for a council opening a hall, a square or a public building: the canvas of the day keeps the memory of the opening and can later join the walls of the place. For a gallery or a cultural venue, the live performance starts at 400 €.

The guests take part in the canvas

During a live painting in a park, Giulia Dal Bon chats with a guest in front of the couple’s portrait on the easel.
Giulia chats with a guest beside the couple’s portrait.

Two formats bring the guests in. During the opening, Giulia paints watercolour portraits of the guests on watercolour paper, alone, as a couple or as a team, and everyone leaves with their own: a keepsake of the opening that your clients take home.

In the second format, Giulia paints the venue on a large canvas and each guest comes to write what they like on it, a word for the opening, a first name, a signature. The canvas gathers everyone who was there on the first day, then hangs in the venue.

Guest portraits start at 1,200 € for a shop or a brand, and at 500 € for a gallery or a cultural venue.

Orlando & Giulia, for an opening night

At the end of the piano and painting show, Giulia Dal Bon and Orlando stand beside the finished painting, before the red curtain.
At the end, Orlando & Giulia present the painting to the audience.

For a private view or the opening of a hotel, Giulia also gives the piano and painting show with Orlando: Orlando & Giulia, Orlando at the piano, a neoclassical repertoire in the vein of Ludovico Einaudi or Hania Rani, and a canvas painted to the rhythm of the music. Giulia can paint the canvas upside down and turn it around at the end, if you are after a theatrical effect. The show is priced on request.

On opening day, in practice

Giulia arrives before the guests and sets up in a space of about two metres by two, visible from the entrance, with a power socket and light if the opening is in the evening. She brings the easel, the canvases, the acrylics and the brushes, and protects the floor around her. Odourless acrylic keeps the shop, the restaurant or the gallery open to the public while she paints.

The length is decided with you, from about twenty minutes to a whole evening: during the opening speech, during the drinks or at the highlight of the programme. The invoice is made out to the company, and Giulia also works with the event agencies that organise the opening. She travels to seventeen European countries, speaks Italian, French, English and Spanish, and travel is priced in the quote, sent within 48 hours.

For the same opening, Giulia also paints the shop window, the sign or a mural in the restaurant. For a seminar, a convention or an end-of-year party, the corporate live painting page sets out every format.

Your questions, before booking

What entertainment works for a shop or restaurant grand opening?

A live painting: Giulia Dal Bon sets up her easel among the guests and paints live the place that is opening, its front, its dining room or its signature product. Guests take the time to look, admire and take photos, and the canvas then hangs in the shop or the restaurant. Giulia is a painter trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. A live painting for an opening starts at 900 € for a shop or a brand.

How do you book a live painting for a grand opening?

Tell Giulia Dal Bon the date, the venue and the occasion, and she brings your idea to life with you. She sends you a free quote within 48 hours. Before the day, you choose the format and the subject together, and she prepares the composition if needed. On the day, she paints in front of your guests, and the signed painting is yours the same day. A live painting for an opening starts at 900 € for a shop, and at 400 € for a gallery.

What does the price of a live painting for an opening include?

The price includes Giulia Dal Bon’s performance during the opening and the canvas, which you keep. The stretcher, the acrylics, the brushes and the easel are included, as is the sketch prepared before the day. Travel and logistics are agreed together and priced in the quote. For a shop or a brand, the canvas of the opening starts at 900 €, guest portraits at 1,200 € and a large format or a full day at 2,400 €.

How much is a live painting for a gallery private view?

For a gallery, a museum or a cultural venue, a private view follows the price of Giulia Dal Bon’s performances: the live performance starts at 400 €, for as long as you like, and watercolour portraits of the guests at 500 €. The piano and painting show, with Orlando at the piano, is priced on request. The canvas, the paints and the materials are included, and the free quote arrives within 48 hours.

Can the logo, the product or the shop name appear on the canvas?

Yes. Giulia Dal Bon weaves the logo, a signature product, the name over the door or the brand colours into the composition, beside the place that is opening. She prepares the subject before the day from your references and shows it to you on a sketch, included, which you approve. On opening day the canvas grows in front of the guests, then stays in the venue. The logo and the product are included in the price of the canvas, from 900 €.

How long does the live painting at an opening last?

The length is decided with you, from about twenty minutes to a whole evening. Giulia Dal Bon can paint during the opening speech, during the drinks or right through the evening, and the timing is set with you when the quote is drawn up. A standard size is finished on site; for a very large format, Giulia completes the final touches in the studio, and the handover date is written in the quote.

What is needed on site for the live painting?

A space of about two metres by two, visible from the entrance or the room, a power socket, and light if the opening is in the evening. Giulia Dal Bon brings the easel, the canvases, the acrylics and the brushes, protects the floor and sets up before the guests arrive. Odourless acrylic lets her paint in a shop, a restaurant or a gallery that stays open to the public. Outdoors, in front of a window, a shelter is enough in case of rain.

What happens to the canvas after the opening?

The canvas is yours that same evening, signed, and Giulia Dal Bon can add the opening date to it. It hangs at reception, behind the bar, in the lobby or in the director’s office, and it reminds everyone who passes of opening day. For a large format, Giulia completes the final touches and the varnish in the studio, and the handover date is written in the quote.

Does the piano and painting show suit a gallery private view?

Yes. The piano and painting show suits galleries, museums, hotels and brand evenings: Orlando at the piano, a neoclassical repertoire in the vein of Ludovico Einaudi or Hania Rani, and Giulia Dal Bon painting to the rhythm of the music. Giulia can paint the canvas upside down and turn it around at the end, if you are after a theatrical effect. The show is priced on request, with the quote sent within 48 hours.

Does Giulia work with agencies, and can the invoice go to the company?

Yes. Giulia Dal Bon works with event agencies and in-house teams that organise the opening: a site survey from photos of the venue, a running order set with the production team, a format and a time slot fitted to the programme. The invoice is made out to the company or the agency, and the itemised quote arrives within 48 hours. For a brand or a shop, the canvas of the opening starts at 900 €.

Does Giulia travel for an opening in another city or abroad?

Yes. Giulia Dal Bon travels to seventeen European countries, to big cities and small towns alike, for a shop, a restaurant, a hotel or a gallery that is opening. She speaks Italian, French, English and Spanish, which helps when guests come from several countries. Travel and logistics are agreed together and priced in the quote, sent within 48 hours.

Where has Giulia already painted live?

On stages, in theatres, at weddings and at company evenings: Giulia Dal Bon has painted live hundreds of times, including dozens with the piano and painting show she gives as a duo. Two of those dates are public, at the Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan for Play Green, and at the Festival Gaber in Camaiore on 6 July 2017, and the Press page tells their story. Giulia also exhibits her paintings in art galleries.
