Getting married on the Costa Brava
Why do so many couples marry on the Costa Brava?
This is the Catalan wedding: stone masias in the middle of the fields, the coves a quarter of an hour away, and Barcelona close enough for guests to arrive the same morning. The Empordà estates host from fifty to four hundred people depending on the house.
Why does a painter love the Costa Brava?
In 1969 Salvador Dalí bought the castle of Púbol, at La Pera in the heart of the Empordà, for Gala. He kept its Gothic structure and painted over whatever bothered him: he hid the radiators behind steel screens, then painted trompe-l’oeil radiators on top of them. The walls took further trompe-l’oeil and landscapes of the Empordà, so that Gala would have in front of her only what she wanted to see.
What does the painting show?
The moment you choose: the ceremony, the exit, the first dance, the cocktail hour with the guests, or the venue itself with the couple in the foreground. Giulia prepares the composition beforehand from your photographs and images of the venue, then paints on site on the Costa Brava. You know what you will get before the day itself.
Does Giulia know the area?
She comes to the Costa Brava and works across seventeen European countries. She speaks Spanish. What she looks at here is the contrast: the grey stone of the masias, the yellow fields in summer, and then all at once the very hard blue of the sea between two pines.

Giulia travels to the villas and reception venues of the coast: Castell d’Empordà (La Bisbal), Mas Sendra, Cortal Gran (Alt Empordà).
From the courtyard of Castell d’Empordà, on the canvas you can see the walls of the fourteenth-century castle and the plain running down to the sea. At Mas Sendra, the arches of the farmhouse and the long tables in the garden. At Cortal Gran, the fortified farmhouse and its old trees close the back of the painting.

What is the best season on the Costa Brava?
The season runs from May to October, and the tramontana can rise suddenly: the Empordà estates know it and shelter their terraces. Giulia sets her easel on the covered side and pins the canvas. It leaves with you at the end of the evening. Giulia is available all year round, winter dates included.
What do we need to arrange on site?
A space of roughly two by two metres, away from the flow but visible to the guests, a power socket and light if she paints in the evening. Giulia brings her easel, canvases, acrylics and brushes. That is all the venue needs to know.
