Getting married in the Val d’Orcia

Why do so many couples marry in the Val d’Orcia?
The Val d’Orcia carries the golden hills everyone recognises and a cinematic light, 90 to 120 minutes from Florence. Villa La Foce, a Renaissance estate with its geometric gardens, and Castello di Velona on its hilltop are its two best-known addresses. Giulia Dal Bon paints live wedding paintings there, from 950 € for the painting made on site, work handed over. She speaks Italian, French, English and Spanish, which matters when guests come from several countries. Free quote within 48 hours.
Why does a painter love the Val d’Orcia?
Because it is a drawn landscape. In 1459 Pope Pius II entrusted the architect Bernardo Rossellino with turning his native village, Corsignano, into a Renaissance ideal city: Pienza, with its cathedral, palace and square, listed by UNESCO in 1996. In 2004 UNESCO listed the whole valley as a cultural landscape, for hills that remain as the Sienese painters depicted them. Giulia paints weddings here with exactly those lines: the ridge, the road, the lone cypress.
What does the painting show?
The moment you choose: the ceremony, the exit, the first dance, the cocktail hour with the guests, or the venue itself with the couple in the foreground. Giulia prepares the composition beforehand from your photographs and images of the venue, then paints on site in the Val d’Orcia. You know what you will get before the day itself.
Does Giulia know the area?
She comes to the Val d’Orcia and travels across seventeen European countries. She looks at the venue before painting: the light, the colours, the architecture, and what the view gives at cocktail hour. Send her the name of your venue and she will tell you what she would make of it.
The wedding venues in the Val d’Orcia
Giulia travels to the villas and reception venues of the area: Castello di Velona, Villa La Foce, Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, Borgo Santo Pietro.
From the terraces of Castello di Velona, on the canvas you can see the Val d’Orcia behind the couple and Montalcino set on its hill. At Villa La Foce, the winding cypress avenue holds the back of the painting. At Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, the stone hamlet and the woods around it.
She also works in Pienza, Montalcino, Montepulciano, San Quirico d’Orcia, Bagno Vignoni, Castiglione d’Orcia, Radicofani, Chianciano, Sarteano, Cetona, Siena, Asciano.
Does Giulia work in the great villas and estates?
Yes, and she adapts to the house rules of each venue: she stands where she is least in the way, protects the floor around her and leaves with her equipment the same evening. Simply let your venue and your wedding planner know. She also works with agencies and provides a detailed quote that drops straight into a budget.
What is the best season in the Val d’Orcia?
The season runs from April to October, and the late light on the hills is a moment couples love to choose. Giulia is available all year round, winter dates included. Giulia paints in acrylic, which dries fast and handles open air, so an outdoor wedding paints as well as one indoors. Allow for light if she paints in the evening and shelter in case of rain. The dates still open are in the quote, sent within 48 hours.
What do we need to arrange on site?
A space of roughly two by two metres, away from the flow but visible to the guests, a power socket and light if she paints in the evening. Giulia brings her easel, canvases, acrylics and brushes. That is all the venue needs to know.
Music at your wedding in the Val d’Orcia: the piano and painting show
For your wedding celebration in the Val d’Orcia, Giulia also offers the piano and painting show. Orlando plays a neoclassical repertoire, in the line of Ludovico Einaudi or Hania Rani, and Giulia paints while he plays, before guests who take the time to watch and photograph the canvas. On the last note the painting is revealed, and it is yours to keep. The show is prepared with you and your wedding venue, on request.
