Nature is her favourite subject

Giulia Dal Bon paints plants with a particular pleasure, and it shows: the veins of a leaf, the transparency of a petal, the way a wisteria hangs, the blue shadow under an olive tree. On canvas or on paper, in acrylic, she works in layers to keep the depth of the greens, which are the hardest colours to hold.

The subject can be a whole garden seen from the house, one precise corner, the rose garden, the vegetable patch in June, the fig tree, the laurel hedge, the tree planted at a child’s birth. It can also be botanical in the strict sense: a plate of foliage, a bunch of wild flowers, a lemon tree in a pot, a branch of almond blossom.

A photo taken in full light gives the true colours. Send several, in different seasons if you have them: Giulia chooses the truest moment and shows it to you on the sketch.

The size, and where to hang it

A spray of leaves or a bouquet lives very well in A4 on paper, framed, and several plates make a lovely series on a corridor or stairway wall. A whole garden needs width: the 40×50 cm for a bedroom, the 50×70 cm above a sofa or a chest of drawers, where it acts as a window open onto green.

This painting is given to those who love their garden, for a retirement, a housewarming, a birth, or when a house is sold and the garden goes with it. And if you want the same greenery on a large scale, Giulia also paints botanical murals directly on walls, from 150 € per sqm as a line drawing.

Your questions, before commissioning

How much does a garden or flowers painting cost?

From 90 € on paper in A4, 180 € on canvas in 30×40 cm, 240 € in 40×50 cm, 320 € in 50×70 cm. The size sets the price, a single branch as much as a whole garden. Large formats and very detailed views are quoted separately, with a reply within 48 hours. The first two sketches are included: you tell her what you think, and she adjusts. Shipping is added at cost, sent from the destination country.

How do I commission a painting of the garden?

Send Giulia Dal Bon a photo of the garden, or describe it to her, and she brings your idea to life with you. She sends you a free quote within 48 hours, then two free sketches: you tell her what you think, and she adjusts. She paints, you follow the progress, and your painting arrives at your door, carefully packed. A painting starts at 90 €.

Who paints the picture?

Giulia Dal Bon, a painter trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. She exhibits her paintings in art galleries, paints with a brush, on canvas or on paper, from your photos, and ships the painting anywhere in Europe, carefully packed. Corriere della Sera, Domus and Sky Arte have written about her work.

What exactly do you receive?

The painting itself, on canvas or on paper depending on the size you choose, varnished, signed if you wish, and carefully packed for shipping, sent from the destination country. Before that, you receive the first two sketches, free, and you follow the progress in photos. A 50% deposit once the sketch is approved, balance at the end.

Which photo should I send for a garden?

A photo taken in daylight, ideally in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and the green stays true. Take the overall view, then two or three details you love: the pergola, the bench, the rose bush. Giulia composes from the whole set and shows you the framing on the sketch.

Can the garden be painted in bloom while it is winter?

Yes. The wisteria can be in flower, the cherry tree in April, the hydrangeas in July: Giulia paints the season you choose from your photos, even ones taken at another time. Say the month that matters to you, and you see the result on the sketch.

Can one particular tree be painted?

Yes, and it is often the most moving subject: the hundred-year-old olive, the lime tree in the courtyard, the tree planted at a child’s birth, the one that was cut down. A front-on photo and a side view are enough. The tree can fill the whole canvas, with the house small in the background.

Can a series of botanical plates be made?

Yes. Three or four sprays of leaves, flowers or fruit, painted in the same spirit and the same size, form a very fine set on a wall. The A4 on paper suits perfectly, and each plate remains a hand-painted original. Say the number at the quote stage for the calendar.

Can an animal or a person be added in the garden?

Yes, from other photos. The cat under the hedge, the dog lying in the grass, a figure watering: they are placed at the right scale, and you approve their position on the sketch. The price follows the size of the canvas.

Does the green hold over time?

Yes. Acrylic keeps its colours, and a final varnish protects the surface. Greens are the most delicate shades to hold, and Giulia builds them in successive layers rather than in a single pass: that is what gives them their depth and their stability. Hang the painting away from direct sunlight, as with any painted work, and the green will stay the green of the first day.

Can the garden be painted on a wall?

Yes, and it is a subject that lends itself beautifully to a mural: foliage climbing a stairwell, a wisteria above a bed, a garden painted on a courtyard wall. The price then follows the mural grid, from 150 € per sqm as a line drawing and 250 € fully painted.
