A pet portrait as a gift
The portrait of their dog or cat, painted by hand from your photos: the coat, the gaze, the position they take when waiting at the door. Giulia Dal Bon paints with a brush, in acrylic; trained at the Brera Academy, she exhibits her paintings in galleries. It is a gift that touches the one who receives it, because it speaks of someone who lives in their home. The animal is painted alone or with their owner, in the light of a walk or on the sofa at home, from two different photos that Giulia brings together; two dogs, a cat and a dog, the whole pack of a house fit on one canvas, and the complimentary sketch shows everyone’s place. The red collar, the chewed ball, the cushion by the radiator, the lead hanging on the door: these details make the animal recognisable, mention them in your message and send a photo of the object.
A photo taken at their level, in daylight, where the eyes show well; black animals call for a photo outdoors, in light shade, so the coat keeps its shades. Send several, from the front and in profile, Giulia finds the shape of the muzzle, the position of the ears and the expression the family recognises. A horse calls for a wider size, for the line of the back and the neck; a rabbit or a bird render very well on a small size, in close-up. For an animal that has passed away, the photos that remain are enough, even blurry or old.
Size and timing
The 30×40 cm is enough for a head in close-up, muzzle and gaze; the 40×50 cm leaves room for the full body, sitting or lying; the 50×70 cm suits two animals, or an animal with their owner; on paper, the A4 fits a standard frame and travels easily. The price is set by the size, an animal alone or with their owner at the same price.
Three weeks make things comfortable, between the quote sent within 48 hours, the two complimentary sketches, the painting and shipping. Say the date of the gift in your first message, and when it comes up fast, the gift certificate leaves by email and is given the same evening: the person then chooses their photo and their size.
Your questions, before commissioning

From 90 € on A4 paper, 180 € on a 30 × 40 cm canvas, 240 € on 40 × 50 cm and 320 € on 50 × 70 cm. An animal alone or with its owner, the size alone sets the price. Larger sizes are quoted on request, sent within 48 hours. The first two sketches are included.

Who paints the gift painting?
Giulia Dal Bon, a painter trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. She exhibits her paintings in art galleries, paints by brush, on canvas or on paper, from your photos, and ships the painting anywhere in Europe, carefully packed. Corriere della Sera, Domus and Sky Arte have covered her work.
Which size suits a dog or a cat?
30 × 40 cm is enough for a head close up, muzzle and eyes. 40 × 50 cm leaves room for the whole body, sitting or lying down. 50 × 70 cm suits two animals, or an animal with its owner. On paper, A4 fits a standard frame and travels easily.
How far ahead should you order a pet portrait?
Three weeks make everything comfortable, across the quote sent within 48 hours, the two sketches, the painting and the shipping. Give the date of the gift in your first message. When it is coming up fast, the gift certificate arrives by email and can be given that evening: the recipient picks the photo and the size afterwards.
What do you give someone who loves their dog?
The portrait of their dog, painted by hand. Giulia Dal Bon brush-paints in acrylic from your photos: the coat, the eyes, the pose it takes while waiting at the door. It is a gift that lands, because it speaks about someone who lives in their home. Trained at the Brera Academy, she exhibits her paintings in art galleries.
Which photo of the animal works best?
One taken at its height, in daylight, with the eyes clearly visible. Black animals ask for a photo taken outdoors in open shade, so the coat keeps its shades. Send several, front and side: Giulia finds the shape of the muzzle, the set of the ears and the expression the family recognises.
Can it be painted with its owner?
Yes, and the composition works beautifully: the person and their animal on one canvas, in the light of a walk or on the sofa at home. The two can come from separate photos, Giulia brings them together. The sketch included shows the composition before she paints, and the price follows the size, and the size alone.
Can you have a pet that has died painted?
Yes, and it is one of the finest things painting can do. From the photos that remain, however blurred or old, Giulia paints the eyes and the presence, with the collar or the toy if you ask for them. The pet memorial portrait page explains how she works, step by step.
Can you add the collar, the toy, the basket?
Yes, and those details are what make the animal recognisable. The red collar, the chewed ball, the cushion by the radiator, the lead hanging on the door: say so in your message and send a photo of the object. Giulia places them in the composition, and the sketch included shows them to you before she paints.
What about a horse, a rabbit, a bird?
They are all painted. A horse asks for a wider size, for the line of the back and the neck. A rabbit or a bird comes out beautifully on a small size, close up. Send the photos you have, and Giulia names in the quote the size that shows the subject at its best.
Can several animals share one canvas?
Yes. Two dogs, a cat and a dog, the whole pack of a household: Giulia brings the animals together on one canvas from photos taken separately. The sketch included shows where each of them sits and the proportions. The price stays the one of the chosen size, and the number of subjects leaves it untouched.
