The village, as you know it by heart

A village is recognised by three or four things: the outline of the bell tower, the colour of the roofs, the line of the hills behind, the tree on the square. Giulia Dal Bon paints them with a brush, in acrylic, from your photos, and composes the view for the chosen size. You tell her where you like to look at it from, from the road coming down, from the bridge, from the window of the house.

The countryside around it paints just as well: the rows of vines, the sunflower fields, the olive trees, a lane lined with plane trees, the stone barn, the tractor at the bottom of the meadow. A winter photo can give a summer painting, a grey sky become a late-August sky: the light is decided with you and shows from the sketch onwards.

This painting is ordered when the village house is sold, when parents leave the countryside, or when a child moves far away and takes the landscape along.

The size, and the occasion

The 50×70 cm lets a panorama breathe, with the village in the centre and the hills on either side; the 40×50 cm suits a tighter view, the square, the farm, the lane; the 30×40 cm and the A4 on paper work well for a detail, a porch, a wash-house, a chapel. Send a photo of the wall, Giulia advises on the size by looking at the space.

It is given for a departure, a birthday, a retirement, or to parents who have left the region. It is also the painting children have made in several copies, one each, from the same view. Give the date in your first message: the actual timing is written in the quote.

Your questions, before commissioning

How much does a painting of my village cost?

From 90 € on paper in A4, 180 € on canvas in 30×40 cm, 240 € in 40×50 cm, 320 € in 50×70 cm. The size sets the price, an isolated chapel as much as a whole village with its hills. Large formats and very detailed views are quoted separately, with a reply within 48 hours. The first two sketches are included: you tell her what you think, and she adjusts. Shipping is added at cost, sent from the destination country.

Who paints the picture?

Giulia Dal Bon, a painter trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. She exhibits her paintings in art galleries, paints with a brush, on canvas or on paper, from your photos, and ships the painting anywhere in Europe, carefully packed. Corriere della Sera, Domus and Sky Arte have written about her work.

What exactly do you receive?

The painting itself, on canvas or on paper depending on the size you choose, varnished, signed if you wish, and carefully packed for shipping, sent from the destination country. Before that, you receive the first two sketches, free, and you follow the progress in photos. A 50% deposit once the sketch is approved, balance at the end.

I only have old photos of the village.

They are enough, and they often carry more value: the village is as it was, before the new houses or the widened road. Giulia takes the lines and the colours from them, completes from what you describe, and shows you the reconstruction on the sketch. You correct before she paints.

Can the farm or the country house be painted on its own?

Yes. The farm, the barn, the farmhouse, the well, the table under the lime tree: the subject can be a building rather than a panorama. A front-on photo and two or three taken from the side are enough. Giulia clears away what gets in the way, a cable, an aerial, a vehicle, and you decide what stays on the sketch.

Can I choose the season?

Yes, and that is often what makes the painting. The russet vines of September, the yellow fields of July, snow on the roofs, cherry trees in blossom: say the month you have in mind and Giulia paints the light and colours of that season, even if your photo was taken at another time.

Can people or animals be added?

Yes, from other photos. The grandparents in front of the house, a child on the lane, the dog in the meadow, cows at the bottom of the field: Giulia places them at the right scale and you approve their position on the sketch. The price follows the size, one figure as much as a group.

Which size for a panorama?

The 50×70 cm is the natural size for a wide landscape: the village sits in the centre, the hills stretch out on either side and the whole reads from across the room. For a tighter view, the 40×50 cm is enough. A very large format is quoted separately, with the same care on every detail.

Can several views of the same village be painted?

Yes, and they make a lovely series: the square, the church, the lane, the house. On paper in A4, several paintings framed the same way form a coherent set on a wall. Say so at the quote stage, Giulia plans the calendar to deliver them together.

Is the painting an original?

Yes, entirely hand-painted in acrylic, layer after layer. Giulia is a painter, trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, and exhibits her paintings in art galleries. She signs it if you wish, discreetly, in a corner.

How do I commission a painting of the village?

Send Giulia Dal Bon a photo of the village, or describe it to her, and she brings your idea to life with you. She sends you a free quote within 48 hours, then two free sketches: you tell her what you think, and she adjusts. She paints, you follow the progress, and your painting arrives at your door, carefully packed. A painting starts at 90 €.

Can this landscape be painted on a wall of the house?

Yes. The vines, the bell tower or the lane can be painted directly on a wall, in a hallway, a living room or a bedroom. The price then follows the mural grid, from 150 € per sqm for a line drawing and 250 € for a fully painted landscape.
