The portrait of a house

A house portrait is a façade treated like a face: its proportions, its colour, its porch, its windows, the hedge in front and the sky behind. Giulia Dal Bon paints it with a brush, in acrylic, on canvas or on paper, from a simple photo taken from the front. She composes the framing, chooses the light and shows you the result as a sketch before painting.

A town house, a cottage, a farmhouse, a flat seen from the street, a chalet, a houseboat, a shop with its awning: everything can be painted. You can ask for a particular season, flowers on the sill, the door in the colour it used to be, the family car parked outside. Those chosen details are what make the painting look like your house, and yours alone.

A house portrait gets handed down: it stays on the wall when the house changes, and tells those who come after what the place was.

Giving it, and the size

It is the housewarming gift that hits the mark, because it was painted for that very house. It is given for a first home, for a move, for a wedding anniversary in the house where you have lived for thirty years, or to friends leaving a much-loved flat. For a surprise, quietly get hold of a photo of the front: that is all Giulia needs.

The A4 on paper frames easily and travels well; the 30×40 cm on canvas sits on a hall console; the 40×50 cm holds a living-room wall; the 50×70 cm makes the house portrait the centrepiece of the room. Give the housewarming date in your first message: the timing is written in the quote, and Giulia organises herself to have it ready.

Your questions, before commissioning

How much does a house portrait cost?

From 90 € on paper in A4, 180 € on canvas in 30×40 cm, 240 € in 40×50 cm, 320 € in 50×70 cm. The size sets the price, a façade on its own as much as a house with its garden and trees. Large formats and very detailed views are quoted separately, with a reply within 48 hours. The first two sketches are included: you tell her what you think, and she adjusts. Shipping is added at cost, sent from the destination country.

How do I commission a house portrait?

Send Giulia Dal Bon a photo of the house, or describe it to her, and she brings your idea to life with you. She sends you a free quote within 48 hours, then two free sketches: you tell her what you think, and she adjusts. She paints, you follow the progress, and your painting arrives at your door, carefully packed. A painting starts at 90 €.

Who paints the picture?

Giulia Dal Bon, a painter trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. She exhibits her paintings in art galleries, paints with a brush, on canvas or on paper, from your photos, and ships the painting anywhere in Europe, carefully packed. Corriere della Sera, Domus and Sky Arte have written about her work.

What exactly do you receive?

The painting itself, on canvas or on paper depending on the size you choose, varnished, signed if you wish, and carefully packed for shipping, sent from the destination country. Before that, you receive the first two sketches, free, and you follow the progress in photos. A 50% deposit once the sketch is approved, balance at the end.

Which photo do you need for a house portrait?

A photo taken from the front, full length, with the whole house in the frame, ideally in clear weather. Step back far enough to get the roof and a little ground. Two or three extra photos help: a side angle, the gate, a detail of the door. Giulia straightens the perspective and clears away what gets in the way, a bin, a cable, a car parked outside.

Can you remove what spoils the photo?

Yes, that is the advantage of painting over photography. Power lines, signs, cars, scaffolding, the neighbour’s house: Giulia sets them aside or replaces them with greenery, sky, a plain wall. You see the result on the sketch and you decide what stays.

Can I choose the season or the time of day?

Yes. A photo taken in winter becomes a summer painting, midday becomes late afternoon, a grey sky gives way to a clear one, the wisteria can be in bloom. Simply say the mood you want, or the month that matters to you, and Giulia rethinks the light of the place accordingly.

It is a housewarming gift, how do I keep the surprise?

You get hold of a photo of the front, taken by you or found among the pictures they have shared, and send it to Giulia with the date. She replies within 48 hours, proposes two sketches, paints, then sends you photos of the finished painting before shipping. The parcel goes to you or straight to them, with a note from you.

Can you paint a flat, a shop, a boat?

Yes. A Haussmann building seen from the street, a flower-filled balcony, the front of a restaurant or a bookshop, a sailing boat at anchor, a houseboat: the principle is the same, a front-on photo and two sketches. For a business, the painting also becomes a brand image, to display in the dining room or reproduce on the menu.

Can the residents or the pet be added?

Yes, from other photos. The couple by the door, the children on the path, the cat on the windowsill: Giulia fits them in at the right scale, and you approve their place on the sketch. The price follows the size of the canvas.

How much time should I allow?

The sketch arrives quickly. Then allow about a week between the approved sketch and the shipping of the painting, plus a few days in transit: the exact lead time is written in the quote. For a fixed date, a birthday, a retirement, a signing at the notary, say so in your first message: Giulia organises the work so the painting arrives on time, and lets you know well in advance if the schedule moves.

Does the painting arrive framed?

It arrives ready to hang on canvas, with painted edges, and the frame is left to you: everyone chooses theirs to suit the room. On paper, the A4 fits a standard frame, which makes the gift easy to prepare. Shipping is careful and leaves from the destination country.

Can the house be painted on a wall?

Yes. The same view can be painted directly in a hallway, a stairwell or a bedroom. The price then follows the mural grid, from 150 € per sqm for a line drawing, 250 € for a fully painted view.
